Lucca – A gem in Italy

A trip to Lucca offers an insight into one of the most exciting chapters of Italian history. And there are many fascinating apartments for rent in this part of Italy (Feriebolig I Italien) The city was founded by the Etruscans, as several other Tuscan towns, and later became a Roman colony. The Roman history can be seen around Lucca, for example. Piazza San Michele, which has the same shape as Rome’s ancient Forum; in the Old Town street structure is rectangular, like Rome, it was: and the Piazza dell’Anfiteatro where one can see traces of the ancient amphitheater. In the eleventh and twelfth centuries the city’s prosperity grew as it got larger share of trade in silk and even became a competitor of Byzantium in the trading of silk.

In 1160 Lucca got its own constitution and was the next 500 hundred years an independent city. Lucca was – like the rest of Tuscany – a part of feudal Europe, and Dante, the great Italian poet, comes in the Holy comedy with allusions to the great feudal families, who enjoyed considerable administrative and legal privileges during this period.
